Ben Watkins

Inside one conversation that booked a meeting

A real thread, names removed. He had just accepted my connection request and didn't know my work.

  1. 1

    My opener

"Thanks for connecting! Saw your company's now part of a larger group. Pricing and positioning two AI products into one story is (probably) the messiest part of any acquisition. Mind if I buy you a coffee and show you some breakthrough ways to approach it?"

Why it worked: the news was recent and public, the problem was specific to him, and the ask said exactly what we'd talk about.

  2. 2

    His reply, the same day

"Let's do it. What's your availability?"

  3. 3

    My response

"Free tomorrow at 11am ET or Thursday at 11am ET?"

Two specific times, so yes takes one word. We met the next day.

A filled in page of the Outbound Masterclass campaign workbook: who exactly, why now, what that change makes harder, where to find them, your first list.
The same campaign in Step 1 of the workbook you fill in as you go.

What this approach has done

From my own outreach and the B2B companies I write for. The lessons open October 28, so there are no student results yet.

15 to 20%
Reply rate on my best LinkedIn messages.
"Best outbound"
"This was actually the best outbound I ever received." A reply to one of my cold messages.
20 years
"He is the first and only cold outreach I have ever responded to over the course of my 20-year career." Britt Prim, Chief Experience Officer, Karias Health, a customer I wrote outreach for.

Where outreach breaks

  • The wrong list. People with no reason to talk to you this quarter.
  • No reason to answer. So the best you hear is "maybe later."
  • The message everyone sends. A compliment, a line about you, a question about their calendar.
  • Follow ups that nag. "Just bumping this." Each one easier to ignore.
  • The reply that turns into a pitch. Someone answers, you start selling, and it ends there.

The masterclass fixes all five, in order.

Why I built this

I write outreach for a living, for my own business and for B2B companies.

This summer I lined up my sent messages against my calendar. The ones that booked noticed one true thing about the person and asked something easy to answer. The ones that went nowhere usually broke at the second message, when the selling started too soon. The masterclass is those decisions, with the real messages beside them.

The five lessons

  1. 1

    Who to target

Pick one buyer and one change in their world, like a new role, a launch or a hiring push, and build a short verified list.

You finish with your list and a reason to write to each person this quarter.

  2. 2

    The offer

Choose what you'll give, a finding, a short teardown or a conversation, and the one response you're asking for.

You finish with an offer worth answering.

  3. 3

    The message

Three lines: what you noticed, what it means for them, one easy question. When to ask and when to invite.

You finish with your opener and subject line, checked before you send.

  4. 4

    The follow ups

The first adds something new. The second makes "not now" easy to say. Then you stop.

You finish with two follow ups and a clear stopping point.

  5. 5

    Reply to meeting

Keep them talking until they name the problem, then offer two specific times.

You finish with replies for a yes, a question, a not now and a no, plus a tracker for your first batch.

This is for you if

  • You sell to businesses and need more sales conversations.
  • You write your own outreach, or will once you know what to send.
  • You've sent plenty and heard little back.

Skip it if

  • You want a tool that sends for you.
  • You sell to consumers.
  • You need a guaranteed number of meetings.

Questions

Can't AI write my outreach?

It drafts fast. The lessons teach you to judge whether a draft fits your buyer.

What else will I need?

An offer you can describe in a sentence and a way to find people. LinkedIn works from a free account. Cold email needs a separate domain, inboxes and a sending tool, which the checklist walks you through.

How much time does it take?

The lessons are short. Building your list and writing your first sequence is the real work.

Will you set up my domains?

No. The checklist covers it step by step.

I've tried templates. Why is this different?

Templates give you words. This gives you the decisions behind them, so you can tell when a message fits your buyer and when it doesn't.

Won't cold outreach make me look spammy?

It does when the message could go to anyone. You'll write to people with a real reason to talk, say only true things about them, and stop after two follow ups.

Will this work in my industry?

If you sell to businesses, the five steps are the same. Results depend on your offer, your buyer and how many of the right people you reach. The examples come from B2B, because that's where I work.

When do I get access?

On October 28, or the day you join if that's later, an email arrives with your link to the lessons, the workbook and the downloads.

Do you guarantee meetings?

No. I'll show you exactly what I send and why, and you have 14 days to ask for every dollar back.
